Return of the Carlton Terrace bard

All afternoon the heat wavered on the runway of paved squares

up to the steadfast, well braced gate,

clean, solid iron hung in the shadows of the whitewashed arch,

the heave and sweep of the cobbles beyond,

a farewell to sure-footedness…
