Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain’s greatest modern poet and dramatist spoke of a mysterious power which everyone feels but no philosopher can explain. It is this quality that distinguishes one particular poem, piece of music or work of art over another. It has nothing to do with intellect, but has more to do with the blood, the passion and the demon which drove him. Lorca called this “duende” and the following poem attempts to understand what he meant by this force and uses text from a lecture Lorca gave in Havana.
‘these dark clouds are the true mystery,
the roots pushing the soil,
which we all know, which we all ignore,
but from which comes what is real.
I speak of duende, a mysterious power,
which everyone feels,
which no philosopher can explain”
